Safe Basketball Betting Strategies

The month of October is a very important month for basketball fans around the globe. This is because it is the start of the basketball season for most basketball leagues in the world. If you like to bet on basketball, the NBA season starts the third week in October. In addition, to the NBA, the leagues starting in October also include the EuroLeague, Spanish League and many more! To celebrate the basketball season starting, here is our basketball tutorial on Safe Basketball Betting Strategies for beginners.

If you are new to basketball betting, the first step is to learn on How to bet on Basketball. Afterwards, it is just a matter of coming up with your own basketball betting strategy. Of course, that is easier said than done. Therefore, these basketball gambling tips will give you a good base to lessen the risks when wagering on basketball.

For those who are thinking about How to be a basketball bookie, this is also a good tutorial to read. This is because it will give you an idea of how to set your basketball betting odds and what sharp gamblers are looking for.

Safe Basketball Betting Strategies for Beginners

Increase Your Basketball Betting Options - The first basketball betting strategy you need is a way to improve the betting odds. This is done by having more basketball betting options. Therefore, the best way to do that is by having accounts with multiple sportsbooks to shop for betting odds. This way, you can price shop for the most valuable moneyline on the team you want to bet on. A favorite team could be -180 in one sportsbook and -150 on another. The more options you have, the better chance you have of finding lines in your favor.

The Home Team Advantage
– In NBA betting, the advantage the home team possesses has been steadily declining for over a decade. However, it still remains an important factor when it comes to basketball gambling. Furthermore, all sports betting software and handicappers include this as a factor in determining game odds.

Therefore, it is imperative to know which teams have strong home court advantages and which teams don’t. In addition, some teams play very well on the road while others do not.

Last but not least, the home team advantage is already part of the betting odds. What you have to do is figure out whether they put enough emphasis on it or not.

Betting Against the Favorite Team – If you know how to do it correctly, there is money to be made in betting on the underdog. Any basketball team can defeat any of the other teams in the league on a given night. However, if you feel that, a +8 underdog has a good chance of winning outright, then it is worth considering. This is especially true when you want to bet on a large underdog. This is because you should be able to at least envision them potentially winning the game, and not just covering.

Understanding Outside Factors when Betting on Basketball

A crucial factor when it comes to sports betting is how much rest a team has before their next game. For example, if a team has a schedule with 4 games in 6 days, they will experience exhaustion. Therefore, betting on that team to win for their last game is a risky wager.

This gives sports bettors almost 8 months of sports betting action giving you many opportunities to increase your bankroll.

Basketball Betting Tutorial

How to Bet on an Basketball Point Spread

The most popular method of betting the NBA involves the point spread, which is a handicap the sportsbooks impose on one team to make both teams equal in terms of betting. With the point spread, the team expected to win will be called the favorite, while the team expected to lose will be called the underdog. The team expected to win gives, or lays, points to the team expected to lose for betting purposes. An example of a NBA game involving the point spread would be:

Boston Celtics +7 -110
Miami Heat -7 -110

In the example the Heat are a seven point favorite. If they win by more than seven points, you win your bet. Less than seven points your bet would be a loser. If Miami wins by exactly by seven points the bet would be a tie and wagers would be refunded.

How to bet on the Basketball Money Line

The Moneyline is a type of wager that provides different odds based on who will win the game. Money line wagers, which is a bet on the winner of the game without the point spread. Here is an example of a money line bet:

Boston Celtics +270
Miami Heat -400

If you wager on Miami you would have to put up $400 to win $100. On the other side would be a wager on Boston where you receive $270 for every $100 wagered.

The Moneyline (ML) odds can vary drastically depending on which team will play. When a strong basketball team plays a much weaker opponent, you will usually see a moneyline like this:

Team Moneyline Odds
Warriors +500
Spurs -750

This means that in order to place a bet on the Warriors, you would have to bet $500 in order to win $100. If you wanted to bet on the Spurs, you would risk $100 to win $750.

How to Bet on Basketball Totals

The second most popular method of wagering on basketball is in betting totals, also known as over/unders.

A total wager is the predicted combined score of the two teams playing. A number will be posted and bettors have the option of wagering more than the predicted total points will be scored (over), or less than the predicted total points will be scored (under).

In the example below, the total points were set at 190.5. The line will have a vigorish along with it , most commonly seen being -110.

Team O/U Final Score
Heat 190.5o -105 100
Pistons 190.5u -115 94

So if you bet $100 on the over and the total final score is 194 then you would win $95
